Dash

Dash got into work early that Monday. He was going to spend the day playing catch up and then, he’d break it to Anders that he needed a few days off from work to move. He wasn’t sure if moving into Cricket’s place with her and Daisy was the best idea, but it was what he wanted. Dash had spent so much of his life doing what other people wanted and expected from him, it felt good to finally be doing something for himself.

Cricket tried to blow it off as if asking him to move in with her wasn’t a big deal, but he knew better. It was a huge fucking deal for her. She had shared some of her past with him, and she hadn’t had a happy childhood. She wanted to give that to Daisy though, and so did he. It was all he wanted and if getting to wake up next to Cricket every morning and crawl into her bed every night was part of the plan, he’d take that deal all day, every day.

By noon, he was pretty much caught up on all his paperwork and decided that it was time to find his boss and ask for a few days off. He found Anders in his office, as usual. The guy was a machine when it came to work. He was always on and ready to tackle the next big project.

Dash poked his head into Anders’s office and knocked on the door. “You have a minute, boss?” Dash asked.

“Of course,” Anders agreed. “You caught me just in time. I was about to head to the hanger and catch a plane down to Mexico for a few days.”

“I’d ask if it was for business or pleasure, but I have a feeling that I already know.” They were dealing with the clean-up from taking down one of the major crime families down there. Anders split his time between Texas and Mexico, working to bring down other drug syndicates who worked to bring their product over the border. Dash had heard that the guy had a personal stake in bringing them down, but he didn’t know the whole story. One day, he’d find the nerve and time to ask him about it.

“See, you’re starting to fit in around here, man,” Anders said. “You’ve only been here a few months and you already know me.”

“You’re a workaholic,” Dash grumbled. “That’s easy enough to peg.”

Anders chuckled and pointed to the chair in front of his desk. “Have a seat and tell me what’s on your mind,” he ordered. Dash sunk into the chair and smiled across the desk at his boss.

“You probably aren’t going to like this, but I need a few days off. I know I’ve only just started here, really, but I’m going to be moving in with Cricket. She’s the woman who has custody of my daughter, Daisy.”

“Oh,” Anders breathed. “That’s fast. Are you moving in to just help out?” He held up his hands as if halting the words that were about to come out of Dash’s mouth.
